Born in Columbia on June 19, 1919, to the late LeRoy Henderson Ferguson and Annie Scott Ferguson, he graduated from Dreher High and attended Clemson University. He served four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II serving in both the North Africa and Italian Campaigns.
